2010-2011 - 21st Century Learning Grant from the Dept of Education awarded a education grant to the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC). AWC has subcontracted with LNF to provide after school activities to children attending Alfredo Andrews Elementary School. In addition to providing enrichment programs, an important part of this program is encouraging parental involvement with their children.

On Thursday, March 3rd the students in the “Alfredo After School 21st Century Grant Enrichment Program performed six short original puppet shows for parents, teachers, and other classmates.  The students created the puppets and wrote the scripts with the guidance of a lesson plan entitled Animal Tales Theatre from the Humane Society of the United States.  Subjects included hens in battery cages, homeless animals, puppy mills, destroying wild environments and the result of pollution on animals. Learning about animal care can teach children respect for others and for the environment.

The puppet show was sponsored by Learning Networks Foundation in partnership with the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center.

For over 15 years Learning Networks Foundation (LNF) has provided educational programming on St. Croix. During this time LNF has forged partnerships with other island organizations including the Animal Welfare Center, the Boys and Girls Clubs, World Ocean School and many of the island’s public schools. Learning Networks has grown to be a leader on St. Croix in facilitating youth educational programming.
